Diltiazem is a calcium entry blocker or calcium ion antagonist used to treat angina (chest pain) or high blood pressure.
Diltiazem blocks transmembrane influx of calcium through the slow channel withoutaffecting, to any significant degree the transmembrane influx of sodium through the fastchannel. This results in a reduction of free calcium ions available within cells of the abovetissues.
The antihypertensive effect of diltiazem is believed to be brought about largely byits vasodilatory action on peripheral blood vessels with resultant decrease in peripheral vascularresistance.
How should I take Diltiazem?
For the treatment of mild to moderate essentialhypertension. Diltiazem should normally be used in those patients in whom treatment withdiuretics or beta-blockers has been ineffective, or has been associated with unacceptableadverse effects.Diltiazem can be tried as an initial agent in those patients in whom the use of diuretics and/orbeta-blockers is contraindicated, or in patients with medical conditions in which these drugsfrequently cause serious adverse effects.

What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What side effects may I notice from taking Diltiazem?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible:
bleeding or swollen gums
tender
irregular heartbeat
swelling of the feet or hands
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
headache
constipation
dizziness
facial flushing
Where can I keep Diltiazem?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15° and 30°C (59° and 86°F). Keep container tightly closed. Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
