Zantac (ranitidine)

Zantac uses

Zantac (Ranitidine) is a histamine blocker used to treat and prevent ulcers. It is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD). Zantac may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using Zantac

Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking certain cephalosporins (such as cefditoren or cefpodixime), itraconazole, or ketoconazole. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking Zantac.

Directions

Follow the directions for using Zantac provided by your doctor. Antacids may be used with Zantac unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Store Zantac at room temperature, away from heat and light. If you miss a dose of Zantac, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Cautions

If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Zantac. Using Zantac alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol, may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. For women: Zantac is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Zantac, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Zantac Possible side effects

A side effect that may go away during treatment, is headache. If it continues, or is bothersome, check with your doctor. An allergic reaction to Zantac is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attnetion if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much Zantac

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat, tremors, vomiting, and restlessness.

Zantac was introduced in 1981 and was the world's biggest-selling prescription drug by 1988. Do not share Zantac with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use Zantac for other health conditions. Keep Zantac out of the reach of children. If using Zantac for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
